  • Name Variation: Gabriel Wheldon (of Yarmouth) was also known as Gabriell Whelding.2
  • Anecdote*: He and his brothers deserted ship at Plymouth, and to escape being sent back to England in chains, went inland to Massasoit's village at Pokonet. There he married Margaret, a daughter of a younger brother of Massasoit (#5054), although he had a wife in England. One brother returned to England and one stayed on the Colonies. He lived at Yarmouth MA. He was not made a freeman for many years, and had to go outside the jurisdiction to become one. On 3 Sep 1638 he was granted permission by the Plymouth colony court to locate at Mattacheese "with the consent of the committees of the place". After Gabriel and Margaret had children (note that Source 168 all his children were by his 1st wife who he married in England, and all children were born in England), Massasoit convinced the English at Plymouth to try Gabriel and his brothers at the Plymouth court, and he was sentenced to dwell at Mattachees on land ceded by Highyannough at the request of Massasoit (in lieu of annual tribute paid to Massasoit by the Cape Tribes). He probably came from Nottinghamshire. Source 168 states that he apparently came to Yarmouth around 1639 with a family of grown children, and left again in 1648, moving to Lynn, then malden, were he remained. 17 Jun 1641 the court ordered William Lumpkin and Hugh Tilly to pay 15s to him for his third part of a skiff or boat they were partners in and for his damage sustained. In 1642 he was surveyor of highways for Yarmouth, and 1 Jun 1647 he was presented and sworn for the same office. Before 14 May 1648 he sold land in Yarmouth to Edward Sturgis. 21 Oct 1653 he and his youngest son John sold lands in Arnold and elsewhere in Nottinghamshire, England, to William Crofts of Lynn, New England (Pope, 489; 1 Essex Deeds, 24). After his death, sons Henry and John in 1655 brought suit for their portions of his estate.3,4,5,6,2
