Thomas C. Long1

M, b. 5 October 1833, d. 7 December 1890
Father*James Long (of Inchineill (Inchineal) Townlands, Ireland)2,3
Mother*Margaret Leary2,3
His baptismal record shows his place of residence in 1833 as Teeranassig, a small townlands of 294 acres about 4 miles east of Inchigeelagh (near Kilmichael, where several Longs still lived as of the mid 1990s). Passenger records for the ship SCOTLAND show him departing Cork for New York, arriving May 1850 (he would have been 16). At that time several English landowners were paying passage for young men to the US, Canada, in Australia, partly to lessen the threat of rebellion in famine-stricken Ireland. For a time he and wife Eliza stayed in Wingham, Huron Co, ON. No documents found, including church records, include a middle name, and midle names were unusual in 1830s Ireland. Several of his granddaughters believed that he started using the middle initial 'C' when he became a catle buyer and livestock dealer in Kansas, perhaps to differentiate himself from another Thomas Long, but that it did not stand for Charles or any actual middle name. Nonethless, some people identified him as Thomas Charles Long. On his way to Kansas with his wife Eliza he stopped in Sedalia, MO, possibly to visit his cousin Peter Long. Source 1823 gives Peter as his brother, so more research is required. He arrived in Neosho Co, KS in 1869, where he remained.2,3,4 Source 1823 gives father as John Long born 1796 Ireland and moved to Dundas Co, ON in 1843. More research is required.4 Thomas C. Long was born on 5 October 1833 at Teeranassig, Inchigeelagh Parish, co. Cork, Ireland.1,2,3 He was christened on 17 October 1833 at Teeranassig, Inchigeelagh Parish, co. Cork, Ireland; sponsors Cornelius Connell, Ellen Leary.2,3 He married Eliza *Ann* Foley, daughter of Edward Foley and Margaret Ryan, on 10 October 1852 at Holy Crossing RC Church, Kemptville, Grenville Co, ON; 1st m. for Thomas, he her widower.1,2 As of 1861, Thomas C. Long lived at Edwardsburgh Township, Grenville Co, ON.2 As of 1870, Thomas C. Long lived at St Paul (Osage), Neosho Co, KS.2 He married Mariam Nettie (?) in October 1879 ; 2nd m. for Thomas.1,2 Thomas C. Long was buried in December 1890 at St Francis Cemetery, Saint Paul, Neosho Co, KS.1,2 He died on 7 December 1890 at Saint Paul, Neosho Co, KS, at age 57; his 11 Dec 1890 St Paul Journal obituary read, ""Sudden Death of a Prominent Citizen. This community was shocked Monday morning to learn that Thomas C Long, one of the most prominent and respected farmers of this vicinity, had died the previous night. Mr Long was in town Friday in his usual good health and shipped a load of stock to Kansas City. Upon returning home Friday night he was taken with severe pains in his side and stomach. Dr Brogan was called Saturday and found him suffering from neuralgia of he stomach and heart. The doctor administered to him and relieved him for the time, and he remained comparatively without pain till Sunday when the doctor called and at once found him sinking from heart failure He died at 8 o'clock p.m. Thomas C Long was one of he energetic and prosperous farmers of Neosho County and he has resided here for more than 20 years, and by industry and economy has built up a very pleasant home. He leaves a widow and several children. Although more than 50 years of age he was, but in the prime of life."1,2 He died in 1932 at Neosho Co, OK.4

Edward Foley1

M, b. 1792, d. 5 December 1870
He appears on the 1829 "McCabe List" that was signed in Bytown (later Ottawa), ON by mostly Irish men, most of whom were working on the construction of the Rideau Canal in 1829. The signors recommended new settlers, often family, back home in Ireland, who might be interested in settling on the frontier in Upper Canada. Signers were Catholic and Protestant, and many acquired land in Nepean, ON, proximal to where 1818 immigrants had settled (northeastern Goulbourn, ON).2 Alternatively, Edward Foley was born on 4 December 1789 at Coolcullen, Fassadinin Township, co. Kilkenny, Ireland.3 He was born in 1792 at Ireland.1 Alternatively, Edward Foley was born circa 1794 at Ireland.4 He married Margaret Ryan, daughter of Charles Ryan, in February 1823 at Killegney, Wexford, Ireland.5,6 As of 1851, Edward Foley lived at Oxford Township, Grenville Co, ON; with his son Edward.7 He was buried in December 1870 at St Francis Cemetery, St Paul, Neosho Co, KS.7 He died on 5 December 1870 at Saint Paul, Neosho Co, KS.1
